Flexible electric trailing cables for use with dynamic equipment in mining operations
South African National Standard (SANS) are issued by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) to promote quality and conformity in connection with products and services. SANS 1520 covers flexible electrical trailing cables for use in mines.
- SANS 1520 Part 1 – cables with operating voltages of 640V/1.1kV and 1.9/3.3kV
- SANS 1520 Part 2 – cables with operating voltages of 3.8/6.6kV to 19/33kV
- SANS 1520 Part 3 – cables with operating voltages of 1.5kV d.c.

SANS 1520 SCOPE AND CABLE CONSTRUCTION
SANS 1520 Part 1
Covers the construction, materials, dimensions and electrical properties of low-voltage flexible electric trailing cables including Type 41 and 61, for use in mines:
- Three-core cables with two power core and a single pilot core
- Four-core cables with three power cores and a single pilot core
- Six-core cables with three power cores and three pilot cores
SANS 1520 Part 2
Covers the construction, materials, dimensions and electrical properties of high-voltage flexible electric trailing cables for use in mines and other applications other than mines. Includes Type 63 and Type 66 flexible trailing cables, and Type 611, 622 and 633 cables.
SANS 1520 Part 3
Covers the construction, materials, dimensions and electrical properties of low-voltage flexible electric trailing cables for use in mines, trailing cables for use on electrical supply systems with operating voltages of up to 1 500 V d.c., and d.c. cable constructions for battery-operated equipment in hazardous locations.
