Portuguese MV Cables
to Portuguese MV Cable datasheets
With its own distinct cable nomenclature, specifying Medium Voltage cables in Portugal or for Portuguese projects can be challenging unless you understand the references used.
Our Portuguese MV Cables are manufactured in accordance with IEC 60502-2 and generally in accordance with harmonised document HD620-10L. They cover voltage ratings of 3.6/6 kV, 6/10 kV, 8.7/15 kV, 12/20 kV and 18/30 kV.
Understanding Portuguese Cable Nomenclature
The table below explains the specific letters and numbers as they relate to the constructional elements and materials used. It should be noted that under HD620 10L, there is only one option for insulation materials: XLPE (Cross-linked Polyethylene) - hence it not being separately designated below.
X | Copper Conductor |
LX | Aluminium Conductor |
HI | Metallic Screen - Copper Tape |
HIO | Metallic Screen - Copper Wires |
R | Steel wire armour (for multi-core cables) |
A | Steel tape armour (for multi-core cables) |
1R / 1A | Aluminium armour (for single core cables) |
L | Longitudinal waterblocking tape |
XS | 3x1 core with messenger wire with XLPE sheath |
E | Polyethylene (PE) Outer Sheath |
V | Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Outer Sheath |
Z1 | Polyolefin Outer Sheath DMZ1 or DMZ2 for Low Smoke Halogen-free cables |
(ce) | Longitudinal water tightness in conductor |
(be) | Longitudinal water tightness in metallic screen |
(cbe) | Longitudinal water tightness in conductor and metallic screen |
flr | Minimum CPR Classification Eca |
frt | Minimum CPR classification Cca s1b, d1, a1 |
It follows that the only sheathing material suitable for a cable holding a CPR classification of Cca is the Low Smoke Zero Halogen compound, therefore the suffix 'frt' will only accompany a cable holding the Z1 designation.
Specifying Portuguese MV Cables
Our team of Portuguese speaking cable and industry specialists, alongside our team of technical experts from The Cable Lab, can support specification against Portuguese references. This includes providing evidence and explanation for cross-border comparisons in order to aid integration into existing power distribution networks or support procurement for urgent requirements.
Details of the electrical characteristics, and cable dimensions (to aid sizing for cable accessories) are included on the technical datasheets linked below. Where additional electrical data or information for installation design is needed, this can be provided on request.
