NYFGY cables are Medium Voltage rigid armoured cables with flat steel wires, manufactured in accordance with German standard DIN VDE 0271.
Insulated and sheathed in PVC, the NYFGY cable is less commonly used than the BS6622 or BS7835 British standard armoured cables, yet is still specified for a range of applications, often where the connected equipment is temperature limited.
It has an operating temperature range of -5oC to +70oC owing to the PVC insulation layer. Cables such as the N2XSY MV range with XLPE insulation have a higher +90oC operating temperature.
Armour is not commonly required in European standard MV installations - unless specifically stated, direct burial cables do not have integral mechanical protection. As a result, the NYFGY cable is used where there is high risk of mechanical damage, such as power plants and heavy industrial settings where critical power must be maintained.
