Most commonly specified in the Railway industry for trackside power supply in signalling applications, the BR880 cable has solid sectorial Aluminium cores and a PVC outer sheath. It is Network Rail approved.
These cables are robust and hard-wearing yet lightweight, with a voltage rating of 600/1000V.
The cable has a choice of insulation materials: PVC which has a maximum operating temperature range of +70oC, or XLPE insulation where the maximum temperature is +90oC.
It should be noted that BR880 cables are not suitable for general signalling use and should be used solely for the distribution of power.
Network Rail PADS numbers are commonly referenced in specifications and white papers. These correlate to the following core and size configurations.
| PADS | Number of cores | Cross sectional area |
|---|---|---|
| 6/142419 | 2 | 16mm2 |
| 6/142519 | 2 | 25mm2 |
| 6/142609 | 2 | 35mm2 |
| 6/142629 | 2 | 50mm2 |
| 6/142639 | 2 | 70mm2 |
| 6/142644 | 2 | 95mm2 |
| 6/151469 | 4 | 70mm2 |
| 6/166820 | 4 | 120mm2 |
