The International Electrotechnical Commission, commonly known as the IEC, is the world's leading independent non-profit international standard-setting organisation for electrical, electronic and related technologies. This extends to power transmission and distribution, and therefore to electrical and fibre optics cables, for which there are a number of IEC cable standards. All standards are consensus-based and represent the needs of the IEC's key stakeholders, with every member country having an equal vote. Currently, there are over 80 member countries represented by national committees and a similar number participating in the Affiliate Country Programme. In the United Kingdom, the national committee is led by the British Standard Institute (BSi).
The IEC's publications and standards serve as a basis for national and international standardisation. They also serve as reference when designing electrotechnical projects and sourcing their components.
